A Message From Our President

World Economy: A Choice for Positive GrowthDave Chapman

W e have all been affected in some way by the world economic crisis, and we are all wondering how it will affect our businesses and our personal lives. There is no doubt that there is, and, for at least some time, there will be a big downturn in activity, but this is not the Depression all over again; this time things will get better a lot quicker.

I am the next generation from the Depression. My parents and grandparents went through it and had lots of stories to tell about what they went through. For example, my father-in-law left the family farm in Northern Saskatchewan at only 12 years of age with only $5 in his pocket to go to work in mining and lumber camps in Northern Ontario in order to send money home. He never lived at home again. Can you imagine a 12-year-old boy leaving home by himself? He admitted in later life that he often cried himself to sleep from loneliness. It was a terrible time.

This time, however, it will not get that bad, as, thank heaven, lessons were learned from the Depression. During the Depression, the central banks cut off money to the banks, and the banks in turn cut off credit and lending to companies, thus strangling them. Many banks failed as well, making the situation worse. This time the central banks are shoring up the banks so they can continue to lend money to corporations, and thus help them keep going. During the Depression, individual countries panicked and cut off imports by raising tariffs to ridiculous levels, and world trade declined hugely, again making it worse. This time, all world governments recognize that it is a global problem and are trying to work together.

I am not saying that there will not be difficult times; there will be. Some companies will not survive, and a lot of people will be out of work, making life difficult for many people. However, the way we look at life can make a huge difference. This is the “cup is half full or half empty” concept. I would like to quote from an email recently sent to me:

“The universal law of attraction, or “like attracts like,” which is totally neutral and constantly in operation, will serve each individual in accordance with his or her perception of and reaction to personal situations. The energy sent forth by
those who see themselves as tragic victims will zoom out and draw to itself the energy of thought forms in the “universal soup” that match the individual’s thoughts and feelings, and the energy combination will manifest “tragic victim” circumstances for the person to deal with. Those who feel genuine gratitude for what they have will be provided with more to be grateful for, and the energy of sharing with an open heart has the same positive result.

But always the foundation of weathering any distressing situation is staying out of fear about it! The magnified energy
of fear assures that the law of attraction will bring fear-filled circumstances to the fearful person. Knowing that out of the current turmoil will come abundance for all will keep your spirits high and your resolve strong if your outlook remains positive and you don’t allow the negativity of fear to intrude. Not only does fear beget more of itself, but it is contagious— we urge you not to let that negativity enter your energy stream and radiate out to afflict those who are nearest and dearest to you!”

Another positive note is the United States’ new president. Barack Obama has brought new hope to people the world over, and especially to the United States. I believe Obama has the leadership ability to make a real difference, just like Winston Churchill did in World War II in Britain, and John Kennedy, whom I remember, did in the ‘60s, the same decade in which they put a man on the moon. These are examples of countries’ pulling together for a common purpose, led by very motivational leaders.

So what does all this mean to the Natural Product Industry? Well, we believe people will continue to look after their health and will still come to us for solutions. We at Purity Life continue to budget for strong growth in 2009, and we will have innovative programs to bring people into your stores and help you continue your growth. We have done a lot of consumer research and will bring this knowledge to you in new and exciting programs. So let’s all take this new situation as an opportunity to grow and expand our businesses.

I wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Best regards,
David Chapman
